Start with projector geometry
An ultra-short-throw projector sends light upward at a steep angle from very close to the wall. The screen must be designed around that geometry. A conventional long-throw ALR surface can reject the projector’s own light if used in the wrong orientation.
So the first filter is not brand. It is whether the material is explicitly designed for UST projection and whether it is oriented for your projector position.
Map the light in your room
Overhead ceiling light, side windows and direct sunlight are different problems. Lenticular UST screens are especially focused on rejecting light arriving from directions different from the projector. Fresnel structures can control more directions but often narrow the viewing cone.
Use gain as a trade-off
Gain describes how much light a screen reflects toward a reference viewing direction relative to a standard surface. Higher gain can increase apparent brightness in the preferred cone; lower gain can support darker blacks and wider directional behavior depending on the surface. Do not treat gain as an overall quality score.
Choose fixed or retractable
Fixed frames are mechanically simple and stay tensioned. Floor-rising screens disappear when not in use but add a case, motor, power and moving parts. If the room is multipurpose, the format decision can matter more than a small spec difference.
A useful shortlist

Is ALR always required for a UST projector?
No. In a dark, light-controlled room, a suitable non-ALR surface can work. ALR becomes more valuable when room light would otherwise reduce perceived contrast.
Is the highest ALR percentage always best?
No. Published percentages use different methods and directions. Viewing angle, gain, material type and the direction of your room light matter too.
