Why a white wall washes out
A conventional diffuse surface reflects light in many directions. That includes projector light, ceiling light and window light. When room light raises the perceived black floor, contrast collapses and the picture looks washed out.
Lenticular UST surfaces
A lenticular or saw-tooth UST structure has microscopic faces oriented to accept steep-angle light from below and route it toward viewers while darker faces absorb or deflect light from above. Correct orientation is essential.
Fresnel UST surfaces
Fresnel structures use concentric optical geometry to redirect light toward a targeted viewing region. They can reject light from more directions but usually trade that for a narrower viewing cone.
What ALR cannot fix
ALR does not make direct sunlight harmless, increase a projector’s native contrast, or compensate for incorrect throw geometry. Good results still depend on projector brightness, room light control and accurate installation.

Can ALR screens work in daylight?
They can preserve more contrast than a diffuse white surface in many lit rooms, but direct sunlight can overwhelm any projection system.
Does screen orientation matter?
Yes. Directional UST screens can perform very poorly if installed upside down or paired with the wrong projector position.
