What gain measures
Screen gain is a relative measure of reflected brightness compared with a reference diffuse surface in a specified direction. A gain of 1.0 is the reference baseline; values below or above 1.0 redistribute light differently.
Why many UST ALR screens use lower gain
Directional UST screens often use sub-1.0 gain because their job includes absorbing unwanted light and controlling reflections. Lower gain can help black-level perception, but it also means projector brightness remains important.
Why higher gain can narrow the sweet spot
Higher directional gain often concentrates more reflected light toward a preferred viewing cone. That can improve central-seat brightness while making side seats less uniform.

PET Crystal Classic lists 0.6 gain; Elite Aeon CLR 3 lists 0.8; Formovie’s 100-inch Fresnel lists 1.0 peak; Spectra Vantage UST is commonly published at 0.5. Treat these as optical design clues, not a universal ranking.

Is 1.0 gain twice as bright as 0.5 gain?
Not as a simple whole-room statement. Gain is directional and screen materials redistribute light; projector output, measurement angle and room conditions matter.
What gain is best for a UST projector?
There is no single best value. Match the screen to projector brightness, room light, seating width and contrast priorities.
